Kenya Defence Forces serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Wednesday (August 20th) took control of Gadon-dhowe village in Gedo region from al-Shabaab, Radio Bar-Kulan reported.
The AMISOM troops battled with al-Shabaab for about an hour before taking control of the village, Beled Hawo security chief Ismail Kofi said.
Al-Shabaab maintained a key military base in the area, making the seizure a strategic victory, Goobjoog News reported.
Relative calm has returned to the village, according to Kofi, and the local population is being encouraged to co-operate with AMISOM forces to fully restore security.
AMISOM troops liberated three villages from al-Shabaab control last week, and Somali government and allied forces announced that they would redouble efforts to push the militant group out of central Somalia.
