One militant was killed and another injured during a raid by Assam Rifles at Ghutghuti near Ratabari in Assam’s Karimganj district early on Thursday.
Sources said, acting on a tip-off, Jiribam (Manipur)-based Assam Rifles raided the forest village in the wee hours of Thursday. The jawans asked the militants to surrender after cordoning off their hideout, but the militants started firing. In retaliation, Assam Rifles jawans fired a few rounds, killing one and injuring another. The rest managed to flee. No casualty was reported on the part of the security forces.
The deceased militant was identified as Hoji Chorki (20) and the injured as Bhadra Moshi, alias Nilmani Barman (19). Both are residents of Rangkhalbasti village in Karimganj. Nilmani was admitted to Dullabcherra Government Hospital, from where he was shifted to Silchar Medical College Hospital.
One automatic rifle, a country-made gun and ammunition were recovered from them, sources in the Assam Rifles said.
The militants are members of United Democratic Liberation Army (UDLA), an outfit active in Karimganj and Hailakandi districts and engaged in extortion, kidnapping and killing.
